The Changing Economics of Business:  Competition, Regulation and AI

Professor Joshua Gans

University of Toronto

Tuesday October 13, 2026 - 5.30 - 7.30pm

Professor Joshua Gans is an Australian economist whose work has helped shape how business leaders understand the economics of AI. After 15 years at Melbourne Business School and time as a visiting scholar in Harvard’s Department of Economics, he now holds the Jeffrey S. Skoll Chair at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and is Chief Economist of Creative Destruction Lab.

Drawing on his books Prediction Machines, Power and Prediction and The Microeconomics of Artificial Intelligence, Joshua will examine a question often lost in the broader AI debate: where does AI actually create economic value? His central argument is that the greatest gains may not come from adding AI to existing processes, but from redesigning the decisions, workflows and organisational capabilities it changes. He will also consider how AI may reshape competition by changing the sources of competitive advantage, determining which firms capture the greatest value and raising new questions for regulation.

Jeff Marowits, CEO of Keystone Strategy, will interview Joshua and bring in observations from Keystone’s work where useful. The discussion will explore what separates experimentation from genuine transformation, where enthusiasm may be ahead of the evidence, and what this means for Australian business leaders.

The interview will be followed by audience Q&A, canapés and drinks.
