“Can Australia become a world leader in Personalised Medicine?” 

How does a rocket engineer become one of the world’s leaders in biotechnology? Club member Mark Kendall shares his personal journey at Oxford University, University of Queensland – his seminal experience as a visiting professor at Harvard – and now The Australian National University. 
Responsible for some of Biomedical Engineering’s most significant inventions, Mark shares his vision of how personalised medicine will become one of the cornerstones of the fourth Industrial revolution and has a vision of how Australia can lead the way. 

As we get the data to better understand the limitations and side effects of generic treatments, there is a growing shift to Personalised Medicine. Even in the case of COVID-19, early detection and treatment of symptoms with an individualised approach would differentiate those at risk of severe symptoms with more mild effects. 

Professor Mark Kendall (BE PhD FRSA FTSE) is an Australian biomedical engineer, inventor, scientist and entrepreneur. He is Founder and CEO of WearOptimo, a Brisbane-based ‘biotechnology skunkworks’ enterprise advancing ‘Microwearable’ sensors for precision medicine. Mark is the Vice-Chancellor's Entrepreneurial Professor at the Australian National University, fully seconded into WearOptimo.

Mark is recognised as a leading innovator in producing technology solutions to global health problems; and a translator of commercial technologies focusing on delivery of drugs to skin and skin-based disease diagnostics.

Mark was formerly a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Queensland. He was Founder, CTO and a Director of Vaxxas, which was the commercialisation vehicle for his Nanopatch vaccine delivery invention, featured in his TEDGlobal talk, which has had over 1 million views. 
Mark serves at the co-chair of the $150 million Australian Stem Cell Therapies Mission – reporting to Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt – and on the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on Biotechnology.

Jon Lindsay, MBA 1987 and Queensland Chapter Convenor will lead the conversation. Jon works as a mentor with leaders of several of South East Queenland’s successful private mid-sized businesses as they meet the challenges of scaling-up their businesses and is a Chair at The Executive Connection. Jon also trained as an engineer but at Cambridge. While he and Mark support different Oxbridge loyalty they both agreed on the life changing effect Harvard has had on their career decisions
