When it comes to ground-breaking medical research, Australians punch way above their weight.

This Virtual Round Table discussion provides an opportunity to hear several of our country's leading researchers discuss the why's and wherefores of international research collaboration, with a particular focus on their experience of working with peers based in Harvard University's renowned health laboratories.

The participants, Sydney-based Professor Zdenka Kuncic (Sydney University), Professor Wayne Hawthorne (Westmead Institute) and Professor Philip Hogg (Centenary Institute), will be joined by their Boston-based counterparts, Professor Georges El Fakhri from Mass. General Hosp., and Professors Simon C. Robson and Bruce Furie of Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center. 

To moderate the session, we are honoured to have Hala Zreiqat AM, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Sydney University.

Participants will explore options to boost Australian institutions’ ability to attract funding, discuss the elements of successful scientific research grants, and consider whether there are smarter ways to translate hard won research outcomes into commercial successes. All of the panel contributors are awardees of Australia-Harvard Fellowships, funding them to visit laboratories in each direction. The Harvard-based panelists will be encouraged to outline their experience of any international collaborations - benefits and challenges. Perhaps they will also offer opinions as to the global ranking of Australia’s research effort and its potential for improvement.
